Tiananmen Square Massacre

The Tiananmen Square massacre happened on June 4, 1989, at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. For the past month, protestors have been gathering in Tiananmen square. They were protesting for democracy.

The protestors were tired of the oppressive Communist government. They did not approve of the way the Communist Party of China ran the economy. The country was generally poor and unemployment rates were high.

However, on June 4, the Chinese police stormed the square during a protest. They shot into the crowds, killing hundreds, if not thousands. The protestors fought back by overturning police vehicles, stoning troops, and setting fires. Nearly 10,000 protestors were arrested.
